Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
